What is Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant alloy that has found a multitude of applications across various industries due to its exceptional properties, making it a material of choice for a wide range of products. It is known for its resistance to rust, staining, and corrosion, making it highly durable and low-maintenance. The primary alloying elements in stainless steel are chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and sometimes other elements, each contributing to its unique characteristics.

Composition of Stainless Steel:

Chromium (Cr): The key element providing corrosion resistance. A minimum of 10.5% chromium content is necessary to form a protective oxide layer on the surface.

Nickel (Ni): Enhances corrosion resistance, toughness, and ductility. Nickel is often present in austenitic stainless steels.

Molybdenum (Mo): Increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Commonly found in high-performance stainless steels.

Types of Stainless Steel

Composition: Chromium (16-26%), Nickel (6-22%)
Characteristics: Non-magnetic, excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility, and formability. Commonly used in food processing, chemical industries, and medical equipment.

Composition: Chromium (10-30%)
Characteristics: Magnetic, good corrosion resistance, lower ductility compared to austenitic. Widely used in automotive applications and decorative trim.

Composition: Chromium (12-18%), moderate levels of nickel
Characteristics: Magnetic, high strength, good hardness, and wear resistance. Commonly used in cutlery, aerospace, and industrial equipment.

Composition: Combination of austenitic and ferritic structures (typically 50/50)
Characteristics: Balanced properties of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, offering high strength and corrosion resistance. Applied in chemical processing and oil & gas industries.

Composition: Chromium (15-17%), Nickel (3-5%), Copper (3-5%)
Characteristics: High strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness. Precipitation hardening is achieved through heat treatment. Commonly used in aerospace applications.
